Did you know that 97% of consumers search online to find a local business?¹ Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is often the very first thing potential customers see when they look for your services. It’s your digital storefront, your handshake, and your welcome mat — all rolled into one.
And here’s the best part: optimizing your GBP is free advertising that can bring new clients through your door fast.
But many local business owners set up their profile and then… nothing. They think they’re done. The rest? Left to chance.
That’s where I come in. I’m your cheerleader on the sidelines, rooting for you to get this right because I’ve seen how a few smart tweaks can turn a GBP from invisible to irresistible.
Let’s dive into the biggest Google Business Profile mistakes that quietly sabotage your local rankings — and how you can fix them today.
Most people treat their GBP like a checkbox: they fill out some basics and call it a day. But your profile is a living, breathing asset that needs attention.
Here’s the kicker: I had a student, Chris B., a concierge nurse. She admitted she only completed about 60% of what I taught her to do on her GBP. Guess what? Within 45 days, she started booking new clients!
Chris’s story proves one thing: your GBP is powerful—even incomplete, it can start driving business immediately. But imagine what you could do if you went all in.
Make sure you fill out every section:
Business description: tell your story and what makes you unique.
Services/products: list everything you offer.
Hours: keep them accurate and updated.
Photos: add high-quality images of your business, team, and work.
Profile strength meter: watch that orange bar turn green — Google literally tells you when your profile is optimized.
That’s your foundation. Don’t leave free visibility on the table.
Google uses your business categories to decide when and where to show your profile.
If you’re a roofing contractor but select the vague category “Contractor” instead of “Roofing Contractor,” Google shows your competitors instead. That’s a lot of customers you’re missing out on.
Here’s a tip: search your service on Google Maps, check the top competitors and see what categories they use. If it fits your business, use those categories as your primary and add relevant secondary ones.
The right categories help Google understand your business and match you to the right searches.
Your Name, Address, and Phone number (NAP) must be exactly the same everywhere:
Google Business Profile
Website
Yelp
Apple Maps
Local directories
Even a tiny difference can confuse Google and hurt your rankings. For example:
(505) 555-1212 vs. 505-555-1212
Those are two different formats.
Google crawls your website and compares info with your GBP. If it finds mismatches, it balks and may rank you lower or even suspend your profile.
Consistency here is your foundation for trust and ranking.
Reviews aren’t just social proof—they’re a trust and ranking signal.
But it’s not enough to just collect reviews. You must respond to every one:
Thank people for positive reviews.
Address negative reviews professionally.
Show that you care.
When potential customers see you actively engage, they’re more likely to trust you.
If you haven’t started asking for reviews, now’s the time. Google Business Profile gives you a direct link and QR code to share with clients after a great job.
Google loves active businesses.
Profiles that never get updates look like ghost towns. That sends a signal to Google that your business might not be open or relevant anymore.
Keep your profile fresh by posting updates at least once a week, even daily if you can:
Share promotions or special offers.
Announce events.
Post photos from recent projects or behind-the-scenes.
Highlight new services.
Not sure what to post? Check out my blog post: What to Post on Google Business Profile.
An active profile outranks a stationary one every single time.
Remember Chris B., the concierge nurse who only did 60% of the work on her profile?
Within just 45 days of going live, she started booking new clients without spending a dime on advertising.
Her GBP became her litmus test — if Google saw consistent info and some activity, she started ranking and getting discovered.
Imagine how much faster your business could grow with a fully optimized, active GBP.

Your Google Business Profile is more than a listing — it’s your first impression, your reputation, and a free lead generator.
Avoid these common mistakes:
Don’t leave your profile half-done.
Choose the right categories.
Keep your business info consistent everywhere.
Engage with reviews.
Stay active and post regularly.
Fix these, and you’ll start showing up where it counts — right in front of your customers at the exact moment they’re searching.
